For as long as I can remember I’ve had an interest in foreign cultures. I’ve always liked being around all kinds of people. When I was 12 I went to the Boy Scout National Jamboree, and was assigned a Korean as a tent mate. An Do Han and his friend Jun Yong San, both from a Boy scout troop from Soul South Korea while I’ve lost contact with both of them I still remember their names and many of the events that we shared. This I believe was the start of my focus of Asia as my interest. Then there was Duong (pronounced Zune) in my senior year. She is a highly intelligent Foreign exchange student from Hanoi, Vietnam. This reinforced the Asian and particularly oriental interest. As indicated by the mention of her blog on my blog I still am in regular contact with her. To explain my focus on Japan in particular. While I like all cultures I’m a bit of a pansy, and beyond loving hiking and “roughing it” for moderately short periods of time, I like my flush toilets and hot running water. Japan is the second largest economy in the world and is most defiantly First World. Aside from that I’ve been playing electronics games from Japan for almost fully half of my life, since last year I’ve been into Japanese animation. I like the motivation of its people and various other things about the culture intrigue me. I think Japan is a good place for me to start exploring my interest in world culture and a safe place with all the accoutrements that I’ve come to take for granted. Missionary work to Mexico is rewarding and very fun, but as a pansy for the “creature comforts” I think it best to start slow and move to more base. I’d really like to do some extended missionary work at some point in my life, but I need to make a couple of leaps in my life first and the first is going to be my study in Japan for a full year, after that I hope to do two years of assistant language teaching in Japan as part of the JET program (Japanese exchange and teaching). After this I’ll see where God is going to take me. These are the most powerful reasons that I can offer to why I am so interested in Japan. Undoubtedly there are more that are more subtle but are beyond even my ability to pin down.
